My first race was in 1972, at Watkins Glen...had dated this guy who had been going since 1967, and since we were in a group that all went...thought it might be fun. It rained and snowed - they cancelled Sat. qualifying due to weather...one guy's tent was run over by motorcycling fools...but on race day, it was clear, crisp and spectacular! I'm not the world's greatest camper, but never the worst wuss, either. Our friends dropped out, but we continued every year. 1974 saw us at a doubleheader - Mosport followed by WG. In '76, that guy & I were married...and for our "honeymoon," he went to a business meeting in Philly and I, to the Glen (with a couple of friends!) - but he managed to join me about 20 minutes before the race. I think Watkins Glen was televised back then...and, of course, the only other race we ever saw was Monaco...and I always thought it would be "nice" to go there for my birthday in May. But in the 70's, in was WG - I even managed the 1979 weekend when I was 7 months pregnant...and camping, at that! But, 1980 was the end of the Glen - and while it had its crazy parts, it really never deserved its bad rep.
1981 - no race, bad decision.
1982 - Eureka! Montreal! This became an annual event until the dreaded 1987 season...when the Canadian GP was cancelled. What would we do? Since I never really saw Detroit as a vacation destination, we weighed the options. Mexico? If we can go to Mexico, we can go to Europe. If we can go to Europe for a race, we can go for two. So we signed up for what is likely the funniest 2 weeks of my life, with FOSA (back when they were doing F1 tours) to Hungary & Austria.
1988 - back with FOSA again, for France (Paul Ricard) & Silverstone. A daytrip to Monaco convinced us we had to get to that race - it's sooo steep. 1989 - Rio (again with FOSA) - easily the most fascinating and frightening city I've visited. We also made the Canadian GP that year.
1990 - our friends got us a room for Monaco...and, at $71 US/night, we won't give it up! We've gone back every year since, despite one or the other of us being between jobs for 3 years; "that guy" and I are still married. Personal info...after spending 20 years in local Tv as a director and Promotion Manager, I decided to resign (yes, -I- decided) because I didn't want to work for my new GM, Satan! Spent a year in flux, but have landed very happily with Reuben H. Donnelley - (until June. a div. of Dun & Bradstreet) as an Account Exec., selling the Yellow Pages. Andy (that guy) is Manager of Hotel Sales at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, NY. We have two sons - one is going to community college while being the vocalist for his straightedge band (it's doing quite well!), also working part-time.... and the other is attempting to get out of high school with the least effort possible - and can't drive, either! He will also attend comm. college in the fall.
